I've avoided writing this post for a long time, almost since starting my blog, because I didn't want to add to the conspiracy talk or sound like a conspiracy nut. I'm writing now because the thought that kept floating around in my head is out there now in national news. If I'm deranged, I'm in good company.
Chris Hayes of MSNBC's All In asked a guest last night, "Could [the Trump campaign] do more to spread the virus if they were actually trying?" Ding. That resonated. Then tonight Rachel Maddow (also MSNBC) featured a Washington Post article, Proposal to hasten herd immunity to the coronavirus grabs White House attention but appalls top scientists.
A senior administration official told reporters in a background briefing call Monday that the proposed strategy — which has been denounced by other infectious-disease experts and has been called “fringe” and “dangerous” by National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins — supports what has been Trump’s policy for months.
“We’re not endorsing a plan. The plan is endorsing what the president’s policy has been for months. The president’s policy — protect the vulnerable, prevent hospital overcrowding, and open schools and businesses — and he’s been very clear on that,” the official said.
In a related New York Times article: Covid-19 Live Updates: White House Embraces ‘Herd Immunity’ Declaration ( https://www.nytimes.com/live/2020/10/13/world/coronavirus-covid/white-house-embraces-declaration-that-opposes-lockdowns-and-relies-on-herd-immunity ), the American Institute for Economic Research, a libertarian-leaning research organization
argues that authorities should allow the coronavirus to spread among young healthy people while protecting the elderly and the vulnerable — an approach that would rely on arriving at “herd immunity” through infections rather than a vaccine. They estimate that herd immunity would be reached at approximately 20 percent of the population.
We've heard this crackpot idea a lot in the media, but this is the first time the administration has admitted that it is the official strategy of the White House.
Wow.
The US population is 328 million. Twenty percent of 328 million is 64 million people that need to be infected with the virus to achieve herd immunity. The fatality rate for this virus is currently just under 3%.To be exact, 2.76%. Do the math. This administration's policy is to allow 1,766,400 Americans to die in order to achieve their solution. It's starting to sound like The Final Solution.
Surreal, I know. That's why I waited so long to write about this, though it started to occur to me awhile ago, when I made the comparison of current events to Nazi Germany in the blog post "Divide and Conquer" on September 8th.
I don't think the virus was a plan; I'm not crazy; but maybe the response to the virus became a sort of Final Solution to the Government servants of the one percent. And the plan fleshed itself out the more that was known about the pandemic and how it works.
Think about it: Who are the most affected?
The poor, those that can't afford treatment.
Black, hispanic and native American communities.
Older Americans.
People who are already health compromised,.
"Those pesky people of color, who are always whining about equality, and can't just be grateful for what we have let them have. Poor people who keep wanting a higher minimum wage, and whining about health care. Old people and sick people: is there a difference? Money, money money. If we purge a couple million of those, think of the spending we can avoid. Medicaid and medicare would be much more affordable, and no problem keeping Social Security solvent. Or, do away with all of those entitlement programs (that's what they call Social Security and Medicare, as if recipients are like trust fund babies) and pocket the savings. The geezers and the untouchables won't be able to threaten us with their votes any longer."
Wonder if they'll bother to bury us, or when the bodies pile up, they'll just grind our bones to fertilize the crops. At least I won't live to see my condo go permanently underwater when climate change overtakes south Texas.
Yeah, I know it sounds out there. So did the Final Solution in the last century.
Do as Michelle O says: Vote as if your life depends on it.
Very scholarly! I LUV the way u cited articles of reference. The problem is some scientists believe tht "Herd Immunity" (or Herd Mentality, according to Der Donald) can't really be achieved EVER! I have a FOAF who is an account, & whn he crunched the numbers early on in the pandemic (like late March, early April) his prediction was for 5 million DEAD by the time all was said & DUN! I thot, he's nutz! Way too high! Now I'm wondering if he wasn't low balling it! 😲😲😲
